● Differences with Western umbrella size notations
Generally, Western-style umbrellas are sold according to the length of the ribs, with most men's umbrellas starting from 65 cm and most women's umbrellas starting from 60 cm.
Because Japanese umbrellas are structured differently from Western umbrellas, even if the ribs are the same length, the surface area of a Japanese umbrella is larger than that of a Western umbrella. This is done to prevent the obi of a kimono from getting wet.
Also, because it has a large number of bones and is made from natural materials, it is relatively heavy.
